Mitigating Circumstances and Reasonable Adjustment

The information on this page will help to guide you should you need additional support, but please do liaise with your personal tutor in the first instance if you have any queries.
Extensions must be applied for at least one full working day before an assessment deadline and all extensions granted will be conditional on receipt of evidence.
If you have missed a test/exam or the deadline for an assignment owing to mitigating circumstances you should upload full details and evidence within 20 university working days of the assessment deadline or scheduled event, or the departmental deadline for consideration by examination boards if earlier.
The deadline for submission of Mitigating Circumstances applications via Tabula is 12 noon 16 June 2027
Final deadline for submission of all coursework is 12 noon 1 June 2027
Extensions
We understand that life can sometimes present unexpected challenges, and we are here to support you when those moments arise.
You may be eligible to request an extension to a coursework deadline if you are experiencing exceptional or unforeseen circumstances, as these situations can understandably affect your ability to study and complete work on time.
It is not possible to grant an extension for an in-class test or exam.
Predictable problems with time management as a result of deadline bunching or other commitments (extracurricular/work), social problems with housemates, problems with printers/computers/getting hold of books are not usually admissible. Students who wish to apply for an extension should support their case with independent documentation (eg GP medical note, Student Support report).
Retrospective deadlines cannot usually be granted. Only in very exceptional circumstances will an extension be allowed beyond one week. Please see further the section on Mitigations, 5.14 in the
Reasonable Adjustments
Reasonable adjustments refer to modifications or accommodations made to ensure that you have equal access to education and an inclusive learning environment. These adjustments are considered on an individual basis and are intended to level the playing field, mitigate the impact of your condition, and support you in your academic pursuits.

Alternative Exam Arrangements
If you have a disability and you require alternative exam arrangements, please as soon as you can. Following that discussion and with your consent, your Department and the Exams Office will be informed of any adjustments required on disability grounds for examinations.
Mitigating Circumstances

During your studies, you may experience exceptional unforeseen circumstances that are outside your control and might have a detrimental effect on your studies. Examples of mitigating circumstances could include a bereavement, illness of yourself or someone close to you, an unexpected change in personal or financial circumstances, or being a victim of crime, harassment or bullying. Additionally, some students receive a late diagnosis of a specific learning need/disability, so Reasonable Adjustments may not be in place. These scenarios are dealt with through the University's Mitigating Circumstances process.
