Postdoctoral Applications

Postdoc applications are overseen by the Director of Research who will be in a good position to supplement the advice offered by your supervisors and the Director of Postgraduate Research Studies.

The Department's Research pages offer guidance about a variety of postdoc opportunities offered by external funding bodies such as the British Academy, the ESRC, Leverhulme Trust etc.

There is usually a session of the GRF devoted each year to postdoc applications; the Faculty website Successful Applications also carries some examples of successful fellowship applications.

Institute of Advanced ¹û¶³´«Ã½

The Institute of Advanced ¹û¶³´«Ã½ offer a range of different resources, as well as funding opportunities and fellowships for completing ¹û¶³´«Ã½ PhD students.

There are two main forms of IAS fellowship. The first is the Early Career Fellowship, which offers a stipend lasting 9 months. These have proved very useful to our students in the past as a transition between PhD and a more lasting postdoc and we have a reasonably strong success rate so please do contact former IAS Fellows from the department if you would like advice about your application. The second is the Associate Fellowship, which do not offer a stipend but enable the maintenance of a relationship with the University and offer a range of support for career development. Honorary Associate Applications

The History Department welcomes Honorary Associate applications from PhD students who wish to undertake research for a period at the University, or who wish to have an association with the Department. Applications can only be accepted from students who have completed final submission and had their award conferred by Senate. Applications are especially encouraged from historians whose work connects with that of members of the Department. If appointed as an associate, the Department is able to provide continuation of access to a ¹û¶³´«Ã½ email account, University Card, access to the University Library and related resources. These positions are unpaid.

Applications to be an associate are initially for periods of up to three years, but can be extended. Applications will normally be made at least three months prior to the proposed start of the appointment period.

The Department expects that academic associates will make a contribution to the intellectual life of the Department and its Research Centres, participating where appropriate in lectures, seminars, workshops, and conferences and presenting their work to the Department. Potential applicants are encouraged to identify members of the Department linked to their research interests before applying to the Department, and will require one of those academic staff to propose the appointment.

The application form should be completed as far as possible, and the associated documents and reference obtained, by the member of the Department's academic staff proposing the appointment. All of the documentation must then be passed to the Head of Administration for processing.

¹û¶³´«Ã½ History Post-Doc Club

The ¹û¶³´«Ã½ History ‘Post-Doc’ Club is an informal social / discussion group of former ¹û¶³´«Ã½ History Research Students, meeting periodically online and in-person to maintain contact and encourage mutual support for ongoing research and careers.
