Assessment
There are four assessments for this module. They are summarised below and explained in more detail via the links to the right.
Historiographical Review: 1,000 words, worth 20%, due term 1, week 8
Debate essay: 2,000 words, worth 30%, due term 2, week 8
Research project: 3,000 words, worth 40%, due term 3, week 5
Seminar: no written submission, worth 10%, based on seminars throughout year

This module follows the History department's marking criteria.
Students being assessed by written exam, in China under the Song dynasty (960-1279). There were competitive exams for entering the Chinese civil service long before this practice was introduced into Europe. These exams were one reason the French intellectual Voltaire, writing in 1730, considered China to be 'the wisest and most civilised nation in the universe.'
