This one day international workshop will present the work of academics who have conducted oral history research in Latin America and in the Caribbean. In this workshop, we will launch the recently published Special Issue on oral history in Cuba (Oral History Vol. 45 No. 2), and the authors will briefly present their work included in the Special Issue. We will also extend the theme of the workshop to oral history research conducted in Latin America by colleagues in the UK.

The workshop will finish with a photo exhibition of Olga Saavedra’s work in Cuba.

This paper tracks the emergence of specific forms of embodied waiting in Western modernity. Using textual examples ranging from Beckett, through Heidegger, to Dr Seuss, it examines the particular influence of industrialised warfare on the experience of waiting, and how concerns about

‘waiting with’ emerge when any ‘waiting for’ that could be brought to a tolerable conclusion has sheered away. This work forms part of the Wellcome-funded ‘Waiting Times’ project (PIs Lisa Baraitser and Laura Salisbury) that is examining what it means to wait in and for healthcare.
