Scientific Background

Research Interests

My research addresses socioeconomic inequalities in hearing health across the life course, combining social epidemiology with longitudinal biomarker-linked data. I developed the Conceptual Model of Hearing Health Inequalities (HHI Model), the first framework integrating sensory health disparities with healthy ageing outcomes, and have used large-scale datasets - including the English Longitudinal 果冻传媒 of Ageing (ELSA) and routine NHS primary care records covering 2.7 million patients - to update national hearing loss prevalence estimates and identify the socioeconomic and environmental drivers of hearing decline.

My work sits at the interface of ageing, public health, nutrition and quantitative epidemiology, and has directly informed UK policy, including reversal of NHS hearing aid access restrictions and inclusion in the Chief Medical Officer's Annual Report 2023. My current focus extends this work to test whether dietary metabolic pathways (diet, insulin resistance, glycaemic control) help explain socioeconomic inequalities in hearing loss in older adults.

Scientific Inspiration

Not one person, but a community - the Deaf and hard-of-hearing people I first worked alongside, who taught me that hearing loss itself isn't the barrier; poor data and policy are. That's what still drives me: turning overlooked numbers into evidence that changes lives.

Provision of Training

I take responsibility for your core methodological training early on - particularly in longitudinal and biomarker-linked epidemiology - with the expectation that you build increasing independence as the project progresses, supported by joint training from both supervisors where our expertise differs.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I set out clear progression expectations at agreed milestones and expect to see regular evidence of progress; if these aren't met, we will always discuss and agree a plan of action together rather than treating it as a one-way process.

Communication

I am happy to discuss any issues affecting your ability to fulfil your potential or our shared expectations, and I encourage a healthy work/life balance rather than expecting out-of-hours responsiveness.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per month. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I have an open door policy, but my pattern of being contactable for an instant response is not predictable.

Work Patterns

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.
