Provision of Training
Depending on your needs I prefer to support you initially, which might involve elements of structured training or more self-discovery as necessary. Over time you will assume more of this responsibility as you gain independence.
Progression Monitoring and Management
Following initial scaffolding, you will assume greater responsibility for your progression as your skills and confidence develop. But this will depend on your needs and rate of development. I believe it helpful and important to have a clear plan and goals to keep you on track, which are always negotiated with you, not just provided by me.
Communication
I am happy to provide technical and pastoral support. This will inevitably involve others at times, and I can effectively signpost you. I like to keep in touch with students, so encourage regular contact, but also appreciate everyone has busy lives, so do not consider myself a micromanager.
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per month. These meetings will be a mixture of face to face and via video chat or telephone, but my pattern of being contactable for an instant response is not predictable.
Work Patterns
The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 2 weeks' notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
