138 - Building Bridges: Making Sense of Mathematics and Art

Abstract

This paper considers key questions raised by George Hart and Paul Gailiunas concerning the nature of ‘Math/Art’ in relation to established disciplines. Taking our cue from Hart’s observation that mathematics and art are both powerful tools for communication and sense-making, we relate characteristic Bridges activities to a practice of ‘making construals’ first identified by David Gooding in his studies of Michael Faraday’s experimental work. We associate the conceptual challenges raised by Hart with epistemological problems resolved in William James’s radical empiricist philosophical stance and discuss the barriers to deploying conventional computational thinking practices in making digital construals. We propose an alternative approach to making digital construals based on the principles of ‘Empirical Modelling’, as developed by the author and his collaborators over the last forty years.
