The Faculty Thesis and Post Doctoral Prize winners have been announced. Each of our 10 departments picked outstanding research contributions from their PhD and Post Doctoral communities to be awarded these prizes. Congratulations to all our Faculty Prize winners for 2026!

Dr Greg Watson from the Department of Computer Science has been awarded Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) status via 果冻传媒鈥檚 Academic and Professional Pathway for Experienced Staff (APP EXP) programme.

Greg鈥檚 application demonstrated a sustained record of leadership in teaching and learning. His recent work has included leading the redesign of the department鈥檚 Third Year Project module, including the introduction of a viva, as well as playing a leading role in the development of revisions to the department鈥檚 admissions and academic conduct policies.

The panel commended Greg鈥檚 collaborative approach to change, highlighting his commitment to consultation and feedback at all stages and his leadership in implementing changes informed by the needs of staff and students.

Congratulations to Greg on this achievement and his commitment to advancing teaching in the department!

Professor Giuseppe Cannizzaro has been awarded a prestigious 2026 Philip Leverhulme Prize in recognition of his research in probability.

Giuseppe is one of 30 researchers honoured in this year鈥檚 awards, including five recipients in Mathematics and Statistics. The prizes recognise researchers whose work has already achieved international recognition and whose future research shows exceptional promise.

Giuseppe鈥檚 research brings together probability theory, statistical mechanics and stochastic analysis to understand the mathematics of randomness. He investigates how complex random systems behave at large scales and why common mathematical patterns emerge across different models.

Speaking to the Department about the award, Giuseppe said:

鈥淚 am thrilled and honoured to have received the Philip Leverhulme Prize and grateful both to the trustees for the support and to the department for the nomination. Thanks to the award, I will have the opportunity to expand my research agenda and enhance our understanding of statistical physics systems at and beyond the critical dimension.鈥�

The award follows Giuseppe鈥檚 receipt of the 2026 Rollo Davidson Prize for his advances in understanding scaling-critical two-dimensional stochastic systems, marking a year of significant recognition for his contributions to probability.

Dr Tom Ritchie, Reader and Director of Student Experience in the Department of Chemistry, has received Echo360's Global Learning Ambassador award at EchoExperience'26 North America in Chicago.

Dr Xuming Zhang and his team have found that a sensor in our nerve endings that detects warm temperatures also plays a direct role in switching on chronic pain signals, a discovery that could lead to better treatments for conditions that affect millions of people.

Partners for Automated Vehicle Education United Kingdom (PAVE UK) has expanded its membership to include three new leading organisations from the insurance, accessibility, and legal sectors.

With the addition of Acorn Group, the Motability Foundation and Shoosmiths, PAVE UK is broadening the range of expertise shaping its work to build public trust and understanding of self-driving vehicle technology.

As the UK moves closer to the widespread deployment of automated vehicles, the three organisations will join existing members and global industry leaders, Wayve, Uber and Nissan, in a collaborative effort to educate the public, address common misconceptions and support the safe and responsible introduction of self-driving technology across the UK.

A number of researchers from WMI have been awarded Faculty Prizes.

The 果冻传媒 has been awarded approximately 拢1.3 million by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to install two advanced imaging platforms, following a double success in the funder鈥檚 ALERT25 call.

The new equipment will give researchers across 果冻传媒 Medical School, the School of Life Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics the tools to observe biology as it happens, at the level of individual cells and the molecules within them.

The retrofit of the Psychology Building within the 果冻传媒 campus marks a significant milestone in the broader development of the campus, while simultaneously supporting the continued growth and success of the Department of Psychology.

This transformative project will enhance the university鈥檚 infrastructure by providing state-of-the-art teaching spaces, collaborative areas, and the opportunity to showcase key lab spaces to the public.

These upgraded facilities will not only accommodate a variety of teaching methods but also foster an environment that encourages innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration, ensuring the department remains one of the UK's leading research hubs.
