About this event

The WMG Work Experience aims at making work experience placements accessible to students without a family background in engineering.

A group of 30 students in year 10 are invited to spend a week at the 果冻传媒 with our engineers. They work in groups on a project for the whole week and produce a final demonstration to present at a showcase. Each project is different and links directly to an area of active research within WMG. We explore the design process, prototyping, testing, and improving, and how each research area will have an impact on society in the future.

Your role

As part of a team of volunteers, you will lead a group of 6 children during the week to support them completing their group engineering project. You will be expected to volunteer for a minimum of 1 slot (2.5 hours) and a maximum of 2 consecutive days (6 hours).

Depending on when you will be supporting the young people in the week, you may help them:

- consider a challenge/problem they would like to tackle through their project

- brainstorm potential solutions and write a project plan

- identify requirements, resources and risks

- test their design and record results

- deliver a specific product or concept to present at the showcase

- present their work at the showcase.

What to prepare before the day

- Put together a team of 3 or 4 colleagues

- Identify a project you would like to work with (existing project or new one)

- Think of an open-ended challenge and two or three potential solutions

- Resource and provide interactive content to encourage the children to work their way towards those solutions.

- Think of ways the young people could test and record their findings and ensure that you have appropriate resources to support them.

- Plan for supporting resources if your group struggles and extension activities if they complete the activities too quickly.

- Provide risk assessments for your activity if necessary.

Timeslots available

We are looking for volunteer for a minimum of 1 slot and a maximum of 2 consecutive days. You will need to arrive 10 minutes before your allocated slots and keep some time at the end to tidy up.

Session outline

Session 1

Tuesday 30th June

10:00am - 11:15am

Session 1 is a meet and greet and brainstorm session. You will meet the group of children you will be working with this week and get to know them a bit before starting the project.
It will be your first lengthy session on the project with your group. A good opportunity to brainstorm ideas, give out roles, and assess the resources available with the children.

Session 2

Tuesday 30th June

12:00pm - 12:45pm

Session 2 is a good opportunity to summarise the decisions made as a group in earlier in the morning and to draft a plan with key milestones towards an agreed outcome for your project.

 Session 3

Tuesday 30th June

14:15pm - 14:45pm Session 3 is an opportunity for your group to start building the prototype for their project once you have agreed desired outcomes, roles, resources and drafted a plan.
Session 4

Wednesday 1st July

10:00am - 11:30am Session 4 is a large prototype building block where you can support your group building their first iteration of the project and test it.

Session 5

Wednesday 1st July

11:45am - 12:45pm Session 5 gives you an opportunity to support your group finalising their first prototype and test it.

Session 6

Wednesday 1st July

13:30pm- 14:45pm Session 6 is the third session of the day where you can support your group summarising the progress made, evaluate what the prototype strengths and weaknesses are and make a plan for the following day. (This plan could be a good handover documents between the group leads if you are not all doing day 4).
15 minutes at the end of the session will be used to tidy your project area and table.

 Session 7

Thursday 2nd July

10:00am - 11:30am Session 7 is the start of the penultimate day on this project (you will still have tomorrow morning as well before the showcase in the afternoon). Quickly review the progress made so far and set the students to work on their final iteration of the project and test it.

 Session 8

Thursday 2nd July

11:45am - 12:45pm Session 8 is a good opportunity to test the improvements made and finalise the project.

Session 9

Thursday 2nd July

13:30pm- 14:00pm

Session 9 is a good opportunity to review the progress made on the final iteration of the project and plan for the next morning. It is a good session as well to level emotions about the showcase and reassure students that the audience is us, their teachers and parents so nothing to worry about.
A photographer might be present to this session. Please let us know if you wish to not have your picture taken at this event

Session 10

Friday 3rd July

10:00am - 11:30am
Session 10 is your last big block session - ideally you want to have finished the project by the end of this session so you can use the session after that to talk about the showcase and start practising presenting skills (but if not, you will still have time to finalise things before the afternoon so no panic!)

Session 11

Friday 3rd July

11:45am - 12:15pm

The last prep before the showcase!

Showcase

Friday 3rd July

13:00pm - 16:00pm

Each group is presenting a poster and their demo to their parents and teachers and WMG staff.

Catering

Refreshments will be available outside the room but not snacks so please bring your own food. There is a kitchen with a microwave and hot water on the first floor of DAC.

Drinks and cakes will be provided at the Showcase on the Friday afternoon.

Photo and Video Consent

There will be a photographer present on some of the days and at the showcase. If you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know before or at the start of the event.

Photos will be used on our social media and marketing news piece to talk about the impact of the event and may feature in our internal and external 2026 impact reports.

You can find a copy of our consent form here for you to sign and return to us.
