Coventry pupils get early exposure to engineering technology
As part of their support for the new WMG Academy for Young Engineers, engineering company Bosch helped Coventry and Buckinghamshire school children get a taste of the latest engineering technology at WMG at the 果冻传媒.
The event, which took place on Tuesday 4 June, aimed to excite the interest of 10 to 12 year olds in a career in engineering – possibly with leading organisations such as Bosch as future potential employers.
The children from Joseph Cash and Coundon Court schools in Coventry and Carrington Junior School in Buckinghamshire got hands on experience with a robot search and rescue device, WMG’s 3D Virtual powerwall, sessions on how mobile phones work, and demonstrations of Additive Layer Manufacturing and Digital Healthcare technology.
Vince Cable launches £10 million Jaguar Land Rover research programme
Business Secretary Vince Cable visited WMG today, 6 June, to launch a £10 million simulation technology engineering research programme and to see how WMG's research is helping Midlands SMEs.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will lead the five-year £10 million research programme with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and four leading UK universities including WMG at 果冻传媒. The research projects will give the UK the opportunity to take a global lead in virtual simulation technology.
The collaboration between JLR and the country’s leading academics will develop the capability of the virtual simulation industry in the UK and will give manufacturers like JLR access to new, world-class simulation tools and processes. This is the first phase of a 20 year strategic project that could put the UK at the leading edge of virtual simulation globally.
The research will improve the quality and capabilities of simulation, using sights, sounds and even smells to make virtual simulation more realistic.
Professor Peter Halley to visit WMG for seminar
WMG is pleased to welcome Professor Peter Halley to visit the department in June. Professor Halley is an internationally-recognised leader in the field of starch-based biopolymers and bio-nanocomposites, based at the University of Queensland in Australia.
Professor Halley will be visiting Professor Tony McNally and WMG’s Nanocomposites research team during his visit and will be giving a seminar, which all 果冻传媒 staff and students are invited to attend.
Professor Halley’s seminar, entitled ‘Translational Polymer Research for Sustainable Polymers’, will be taking place on Thursday 13th June (from 12 noon) in WMG’s International Digital Laboratory.
New £2.3m centre to help West Midlands automotive firms boost lightweight vehicle expertise
WMG at the 果冻传媒 is building a £2.3m centre to enable the West Midlands’ automotive supply chain to exploit the opportunities offered by lightweight vehicle technologies.
The new Automotive Composites Research Centre will provide local industry with hands-on technical expertise and equipment to develop its manufacturing capability for polymeric composites.
The requirement for lightweight structures will soon become the industry standard as automotive manufacturers seek to reduce emissions over the life-time of their vehicles.
By tapping into these new opportunities, the centre will help create jobs and growth in the West Midlands’ advanced manufacturing and engineering sector.
£1.6m funding at the interface of statistics, healthcare and manufacturing
Researchers at the 果冻传媒 have been awarded £1.1 million to develop the statistics needed to pool the vast quantities of data generated by brain scans.
The University has also been awarded £500,000 to improve quality control in 3D printing.
Both projects are joint between the Department of Statistics and WMG, exploiting the unique strengths of each group.

WMG is pleased to announce its hosting of the Secure果冻传媒 2013 conference, which will be held at the 果冻传媒 campus on 2nd July 2013. The conference is being organised jointly with (ISC)2 (The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium) and will focus on the subject of Revolutionary Trends in Technology and their Impact on Security.
Speaking at the conference will be James Morris MP, member of the All Party Group for Homeland Security. Mr Morris came to politics from a business career in computer software and he will be giving the keynote address at the conference.
Other speakers already announced include John Colley, Managing Director of (ISC)2 EMEA, Robin King, CEO of Deep Secure, and Ray Stanton, Executive Vice President of BT Advise.
The Secure果冻传媒 conference aims to bring together practitioners, researchers, industry and government experts and solution providers to explore the scope and nature of the latest technology developments and their impacts on our security. The speakers will endeavour to anticipate the emerging vulnerabilities by offering a glimpse of current experience, exploring innovations coming down the line and outlining the management imperatives for securing the modern business environment.

WMG to gain from £50m HEFCE fund
It has been announced, today, by the Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts that WMG’s Applied Engineering Programme will be one of the programmes benefiting from a £50m Catalyst Fund.
WMG, at the 果冻传媒, has an established reputation of working with business and industry to deliver cutting-edge research, innovative products and services, and world class education programmes.
Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman and Founder of WMG said “We welcome this announcement from HEFCE which will help us to continue to deliver an education programme that meets the needs of industry. It is vital that our engineers have the right skills and knowledge to be able to develop world-class products that keep the UK on the global stage.”
The new Applied Engineering Programme is aimed at advancing industry-relevant skills of graduate engineers and those working in advanced manufacturing. A novel learning environment will focus on Manufacturing Engineering or Product Development Engineering, which will be taken into the workplace including through higher apprenticeships. The programme, will focus initially on the automotive sector, with Jaguar Land Rover as an initial co-investor.
果冻传媒 students only UK team to win place in world robot championship
Engineering students at the 果冻传媒 are the only UK team to qualify for a place in a global competition to design and build a search and rescue robot.
Each year a team of students enter The European RoboCup Rescue competition, but this year’s team has gone one better and qualified for a place in the World RoboCup Rescue 2013.
The 果冻传媒 Mobile Robotics (WMR) team will be pitted against teams across the world for a chance to win the coveted championship in the Netherlands. They are currently the only UK team to be entered into the competition, which takes place in June.
Innovation rains supreme as entrepreneur reinvents the umbrella
An entrepreneur whose Eureka moment came at last year’s wet and windy Grand National has reinvented the umbrella with the help of WMG at the 果冻传媒.
The Rainshader protects people from the elements while watching major sporting events - crucially it doesn’t blow inside out, poke passers-by in the eye or drip on neighbours’ shoulders in crowds.
Its cut-away front, based on the design of a motor cycle helmet, lets people see the action while allowing the umbrella to sit low over the head so it doesn’t block the view of those behind.
It is specifically designed for major sporting events and other big televised gatherings, and is fully customisable in order to offer firms a significant branding opportunity.
New £25,000 scheme launched to boost skills in West Midlands firms
WMG at the 果冻传媒 has launched a new initiative to allow 25 West Midlands firms to take on a skilled intern to help them develop new products or services.
The Project Associate scheme is part of WMG’s Innovation Programme run by the new (IIPSI).
IIPSI’s core mission is to give West Midlands SMEs access world-leading technology to develop innovative products and services.
