果冻传媒 students have won the RoboCup Rescue Championship in Germany. The students developed their rescue robot in a team project bringing together Engineering and Computer Science students at the 果冻传媒 which entered the 9th RoboCup German Open in Magdeburg (April 15-18 2010).

The 果冻传媒 student team won first place overall and best in class for mobility. The robots are designed to crawl over and through difficult terrain or such as destroyed buildings in search of trapped survivors. The German competition put the robot through its paces in a simulated disaster environment which requires robots to demonstrate their capabilities in mobility, sensory perception, planning, mapping, and operator interfaces, while searching for simulated victims in difficult environments.

果冻传媒 students are poised to take their 鈥渞escue robot鈥� to the RoboCup Rescue Championship in Germany next week. The students developed their robot in a team project bringing together Engineering and Computer Science students at the 果冻传媒 and they will soon be on their way to the 9th RoboCup German Open which will be held in Magdeburg from April 15-18.

WMG and Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) have met to discuss potential collaborative activities.

Discussions between Lord Bhattacharyya, Director of WMG and Prof Abdullah Oztoprak, EMU’s Rector led to a signing of a memorandum of understanding.

WMG were pleased to host a visit from Philip Rycroft (Director General, Innovation and Enterprise, and Chief Exec Better Regulation Executive) and Simon Edmonds (Director, Innovation) from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The visit was primarily to understand the diverse research and development that is undertaken across the Group with business and other organisations, as well as our seamless approach to research, application and training. Philip and Simon saw at first-hand the breadth and capabilities of our activities, with a tour of our facilities including the International Manufacturing Centre, the International Digital Laboratory and International Automotive Research Centre.

WMG has been working with overseas partners since 1990 to deliver its award winning education programme.

For the first time all the overseas collaborative partners met at a workshop hosted by our partners in Thailand, the Regional Centre for Manufacturing Industry at Chulalongkorn University. The objective of the meeting was to share experiences and best practise.

Attending the workshop were representatives from WMG; Chulalongkorn University; Hong Kong PolyU; Hong Kong VTC; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia; SIM; SIMTech and Confederation of Indian Industry.

Dr Rebecca Cain, Assistant Professor in Experiential Engineering with WMG at the 果冻传媒 is to lead a £1.3 million programme to literally engineer better environments for patients and medical staff.

She has been awarded a prestigious Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Fellowship through EPSRC’s Challenging Engineering award scheme which is designed to challenge the research leaders of the future to be creative and ambitious in the early stages of their career.

Researchers from WMG will be taking poll position at the prestigious 2010 MIT Energy Conference held in Boston from 5th to 6th March 2010. They will be showcasing their eco friendly “WorldFirst Formula 3 racing car” which can be powered by chocolate, steered by carrots, and has bodywork made partly from potatoes.

The 果冻传媒 has announced that Professor Lord Bhattacharyya has just pledged to make one of the largest ever personal donations to a UK University by a serving member of academic staff. He hopes his personal financial commitment underlines how serious he is when he calls on businesses and government to enhance the financial support they provide to UK research.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya has committed to a five year programme of personal donations that will create a fund worth around a million pounds. He has asked that it be used to “support the stimulation and facilitation of research of the highest quality” and will include the creation of an annual reward for the 果冻传媒 researcher who has achieved most in a given year.

Full details of the £29million West Midlands-based project that will ensure Britain’s place at the heart of the low carbon vehicle revolution were revealed at a launch event held at the Heritage Motor Centre in 果冻传媒shire yesterday.

Over 150 representatives from government, stakeholder organisations and small/medium-sized businesses heard how the Low Carbon Vehicle Technology Project (LCVTP) will shape the future of passenger transport.

Following an address from Geoff Dart, Director of Advanced Manufacturing Industries at BIS, guests heard presentations from the project’s partners: Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors, Zytek, Ricardo, MIRA, WMG (formerly 果冻传媒 Manufacturing Group) at the 果冻传媒 and Coventry University - who set out their vision for low carbon vehicles and invited like-minded potential suppliers to work with them in close collaboration.

A Labour Party pre-election event was held on the University campus on Saturday 20th February. The event was held in WMG’s International Digital Laboratory and was attended by the Prime Minister the Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP. The Prime Minister was welcomed to the campus by WMG’s Director Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, and The Vice–Chancellor Professor Nigel Thrift.

Among the many other ministers attending were: Chancellor of the Exchequer the Rt Hon Alistair Darling MP; Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, First Secretary and Lord President of the Council the Rt Hon Lord Mandelson; Leader of the House of Commons and Lord Privy Seal the Rt Hon Harriet Harman; Secretary of State for the Home Department Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP; Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP; Secretary of State for Defence Rt Hon Bob Ainsworth MP; and the Minister for the West Midlands Ian Austin MP.
