Festival of Social Sciences Seminar: “Working beyond retirement age: what we know and what we don’t know”

Population ageing and pressures on public finances have resulted in government pressing the extension of working lives. The economic crisis has meant that some people feel they cannot afford to retire but also that many employers are cutting back on their workforces. Bernard Casey will be giving a seminar on Wednesday 18 May 2011 as part of the 果冻传媒 in which he will provide insights into current research on issues relating to post-retirement-age working.

is a Principal Research Fellow in IER who works on the economic implications of societal ageing. He has been a senior economist at the OECD and is currently a consultant to the European Commission with respect to its proposed Year of Active Ageing. With Professor Noel Whiteside from the Department of Sociology at the 果冻传媒, he authored an article for Parliamentary Brief (May 2011) entitled “The pensions web which Mr Webb has to unweave”.

IER and Connexions Kent received National Careers Award

For the second year running, IER in partnership with won a National Careers Award for ‘research by an organisation’. The event was organised by the Institute of Careers Guidance (the largest professional careers organisation in the UK) and was held in Leeds. The award was in recognition of the innovative research and development carried out by IER and Connexion Kent on Career Constructor. Career Constructor was the result of a three year research project on the integration of ICT in career guidance practice. It brings together information on over 800 jobs and over 400 videos with interactive exercises, local searches and customised career research – all aimed at providing a comprehensive web-based career package for young people. Career Constructor was designed to enable young people to conduct detailed career searches, record their own research and profile in an e-portfolio format, explore labour market data and rate jobs.

Sunday 27 March marks the date for the UK's Census of Population 2011. Every 10 years, the Office for National Statistics carries out this census to take a snapshot of the UK's population and to provide key information to help national and local government in planning for service delivery. IER's Professor Peter Elias, writing for the 果冻传媒's , explains the importance of census data as a key resource for research, and one of the country's most important assets for statistical research.

Second ESRC seminar on career guidance to be held at the University of Glamorgan

The ESRC seminar series entitled: ‘Re-framing service delivery, professional practices and professional identities in UK careers work’ is being organised by Professor Jenny Bimrose and Dr Sally-Anne Barnes from the Institute for Employment Research in partnership with Professors Laurie Cohen and John Arnold from Loughborough University.  The series will comprise 6 one-day seminars. The title of the second is: ‘Professional associations & professionalism: exploring the ‘Balkanisation’ of careers guidance, the role of the associations and their inter-relationships’ at the University of Glamorgan on 31st March, 2011.  More information on the seminar series is available.
