The Law School is delighted to announce that Jason Beer KC has been made an Honorary Professor of Law with effect from 1 August 2026 for a period of three years.

Jason was an undergraduate student at 果冻传媒 Law School between 1998 and 1991 before joining 5 Essex Chambers and becoming the country鈥檚 leading barrister specialising in public inquiries. He is the lead author of the main monograph in the field (Public Inquiries OUP, 2011).

He was named Barrister of the Year and Public Law Silk of the Year 2025 by Legal Business and Legal 500 respectively for his outstanding work in numerous public inquiries and in particular the Post Office Horizon Inquiry. He is the Head of Chambers of 5 Essex Chambers and sits as a Deputy High Court Judge (KBD and ChD) and as a Recorder of the Crown Court.

Jason said:

The School of Law is at the forefront of research and teaching in relation to public inquiries (including the provision from September this year of an exciting optional module for undergraduates: Public Inquiries: Democracy, Truth and Justice Beyond the Courtroom). I am very much looking forward to contributing to the work of the University in this important field."

Over the past year, Jason has been working with the 果冻传媒 to develop academic research into the commissioning, conduct and output of public inquiries. Professor Andrew Williams, Head of 果冻传媒 Law School commented:
