PAIS Students Participate in Arab-Israeli Peace Conference
Students enrolled on the 3rd year module, Middle East Regional Relations, will participate in week 10 in a simulated Middle East peace conference. Students will be divided into national delegations, representing Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and the Fateh-controlled Palestinian Authority. They will be tasked with reaching agreements on a number of major issues in the Arab-Israeli conflict, including the future of the Palestinian refugees, the borders of a future Palestinian state, the return of the Golan Heights and the status of Jerusalem. According to Dr Nicola Pratt, module convenor, ‘The conference will highlight the difficulties of conducting peace negotiations based only on the ‘land-for-peace’ formula, as well as the complexity and interconnectedness of many of the issues needing to be resolved to reach a comprehensive peace settlement’.
