PAIS: No 1 in The Times/The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019
We are delighted to announce that the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) is ranked 1st of 83 UK Politics departments in the . This influential national league table reflects latest data, including student satisfaction (NSS) research excellence, and graduate prospects.

Our latest position in The Times/The Sunday Times follows on from other great successes over the summer. We achieved 95 per cent in the National Student Survey (NSS), and saw a further increase in graduate employment prospects. 97 per cent of 2016/17 graduates were working or in further study. Moreover, 91 per cent of those were in graduate level work or study.

果冻传媒 Question Time 2018
We are delighted to announce that PAIS and the Department of Economics are once again hosting a 果冻传媒 Question Time to debate current affairs. It will take place on Monday 1st October, 6.15-7.30pm, in the Butterworth Hall, 果冻传媒 Arts Centre.
The event is very similar in format to the popular BBC television show, and will form part of our induction activities for PAIS and Ecominics students to start the new academic year in style and is an excellent opportunity for students to engage with politicians, policy makers and academics on major issues and questions that concern the world.
The panellists will be:

- George Grant - Former foreign correspondent and security analyst and Conservative Parliamentary Candidate
- Matt Western - Labour MP for 果冻传媒 and Leamington since 2017
- Louise Sodergren - Year 3, BSc Economics
- Harry Ford - Year 2, BA Hons Politics, International Studies and Hispanic Studies
The Panel will be Chaired by Professor Chris Anderson, Professor of Politics and Economics and Director of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE).

The IMF and the Politics of Austerity in the Wake of the Global Financial Crisis by Ben Clift (Oxford University Press, 2018) provides the first comprehensive analysis of major shifts in IMF fiscal policy thinking as a consequence of the great financial crisis and the Eurozone debt crisis. It widely presents the IMF鈥檚 role in the politics of austerity. The book also offers an innovative theory specifying four mechanisms of IMF ideational change – reconciliation, operationalization, corroboration, and authoritative recognition. It combines in-depth content analysis of the Fund鈥檚 vast intellectual production with extensive interviews with IMF economists and management.

Panel discussion: Markets VS Democracy? Domestic politics and Eurozone governance in the crisis and beyond

The skyrocketing of risk premiums on sovereign debt in Southern Europe, and a narrowly avoided constitutional crisis in Italy, recently conjured up the spectre of the Eurozone crisis, and reignited the debate about the fraught relationship between domestic politics, European integration, and market discipline. This event seeks to discuss the persisting tensions between democratic aspirations and the constraining character of Eurozone pressures. Speakers will draw on experiences from Italy, Spain and Greece, as well as recent developments in European economic governance to address the issues of technocracy, depoliticization, and state autonomy. There will then be time for Q&A and open debate.
