Macedonia may be a parliamentary democracy, but it’s also a fragile multicultural state. Its democracy has been in gradual decline since the mid-2000s – and in an era of unstable geopolitics and rising authoritarianism, the right sequence of events could send it slipping back into inter-ethnic strife.

The precarity of the country’s situation was made plain in April, when more than 200 protestors and loyalists to the Macedonian conservative-nationalist VMRO-DMPNE party , and physically attacked lawmakers, who had earlier elected an ethnic Albanian politician, Talat Xhaferi, as speaker. The brawl left 77 people injured.

The Department of Politics and International Studies has once again ranked ; overall the 果冻传媒 is 8th.

This latest good news follows on from PAIS' ranking of 44th in last month’s QS World University Rankings (up from 50th last year). Well done to all staff and students on this collective achievement.

Losing Ground: On Holes and Other Absences, a two-day event which includes a workshop, an exhibition and a round table, will take place on May 19th and 20th.

Both the workshop and the exhibition are funded by the Institute of Advanced 果冻传媒 (IAS), the department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) and The New School in New York.

The exhibition will feature the work of Heide Fasnacht and Jenny Perlin (The New School, New York). They will be joined in a roundtable session by Professor Teresa Stoppani (Leeds-Beckett) and Dr Divya P. Tolia-Kelly (Durham).

The event will be held in the Humanities Studio at the 果冻传媒 on the 19th and 20th of May, 2017.

Richard Aldrich and Rory Cormac have worked with Channel 4 to produce a 2-part documentary on how British spies targeted Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. New evidence reveals the extent of the surveillance, who ordered it, and the unique insights it provided into Downing Street's response to a constitutional crisis. The first programme will be show on Sunday at 8pm and the second programme will be shown the following week.

We are delighted to announce that Professor was given the Distinguished Scholar Award by the Intelligence Studies Section at ISA 2017 in Baltimore.

The Intelligence Studies Section Distinguished Scholar Award recognises a distinguished record in publishing and service to ISA by a scholar whose work has made substantial impact in the area of intelligence studies.

At the reception honouring Richard’s work, the section chair emphasised the strong contribution that PAIS as a whole had made to Intelligence Studies over the last ten years.
