We are delighted to announce that the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) and the Department of Economics are hosting a 果冻传媒 Question Time on the year’s hot topic of Brexit. It will take place on Monday 3rd October, 6.15-7.45pm, in Butterworth Hall. By joining together it means we can put on the biggest and best event possible and ensure PAIS students can take full advantage of the opportunity. Based on student feedback it is clear you would like more events of this kind and we are looking forwarding to starting off the 2016 academic year in such an exciting way.

The format is very similar to the popular BBC television show and it will allow an engagement with politicians, policy makers and academics.. The event will have a real PAIS flavour, with PAIS providing both one of the panellists and the Chair.

The panellists will be:

• Hazel Blears, former Labour Cabinet Minister
• Suzanne Evans, Board Member of Vote Leave and Former Spokesperson for UKIP
• Wyn Grant, Former Head of PAIS and distinguished political scientist and Professor
• Dennis Novy - Associate Professor of Economics

The Panel will be Chaired by Shirin Rai, Professor in PAIS, and co-lead of 果冻传媒’s Global Research Priority Programme on International Development.

On 12-13 September, 2016 果冻传媒 University will host the international workshop “Unpacking the Sending State: Regimes, Institutions, and non-State Actors in Diaspora & Emigration Politics,” conducted with the sponsorship of the International Studies Association and the ERC Starting Grant “Diasporas and Contested Sovereignty.” 

This workshop seeks to understand how regimes, institutions and non-actors shape sending states’ extraterritorial engagement with migrants and diaspora populations abroad. This is the second workshop to be convened as part of a venture research grant, sponsored by the International Studies Association. This emerging research agenda seeks to consolidate ideas on international migration politics within the fields of International Relations and Comparative Politics on issues of statehood, conflicts and security, democratization, authoritarianism, political economy, and political geography. The focus of the 果冻传媒 workshop will be on the role of political regimes.

A Keynote speech “State and Local Policy Regimes: Immigration Reception and Immigrant Engagement” will be given by Professor Michael Jones-Correa (University of Pennsylvania) on 12 September 16:00 – 18:00 at Radcliffe Conference Centre at 果冻传媒 University. No less than four of our undergraduate students received the honour of being Highly Commended Entrants in the Politics & International Relations category of this year’s competition.

, Associate Professor of US National Security in PAIS, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Founded and given its Royal Charter in 1868, the RHS is the UK’s foremost-learned society advancing the scholarly study of the past.

Fellowships are awarded to those who have made an original contribution to historical scholarship, typically through the authorship of monographs or a body of scholarly work similar in scale and impact to a monograph. Election is conducted by peer review.

We would like to thank all of our students, recent graduates, and academic and administrative colleagues for our exceptional results in the 2016 National Student Survey (NSS). Every year finalists complete the NSS across the UK and it is a key component of league tables published in the media.

We are delighted to announce that in the 2016 NSS we have achieved an overall satisfaction rating of 97 per cent. We are now top of the University for overall student satisfaction (the Institution as a whole has risen by 1 per cent to 88 per cent) and the Vice-Chancellor has sent us his personal congratulations on this terrific result.
