Tina Freyburg is to appear, as the only academic, on a panel debating low youth turnout in UK elections. The debate takes place today (Thursday April 30th)

Britain has an extremely low level of youth voting. At the last general election, there was a 37 percentage point gap between people aged over-55 who voted and those under-35. British young adults appear to be unusually turned off by the democratic process.

The 果冻传媒 Policy Lab is researching this issue. They are hosting an event – aimed at 16 to 24 year olds - where they will share some preliminary findings from their research but, more importantly, create an opportunity for participants to put forward their thoughts and ideas and to debate with our fantastic panel of experts and commentators.

The debate takes place from 5.30pm - 7.00pm in the Studio Theatre, 果冻传媒 Arts Centre. It is free to attend.

On 16 May, 2015 at 1pm the film “Grandma’s Tattoos” by Swedish filmmaker of Armenian descent, Suzanne Khardalian, will be screened at the 果冻传媒 Arts Centre cinema in association with the ERC Starting Grant Project “” and .

The 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide is being commemorated in 2015. One hundred years ago on April 24, the Young Turk regime of the collapsing Ottoman Empire started to round up and either eventually massacre or expose to an imminent death in the Syrian desert an estimated 800,000 to 1.5 million Armenians.

“Grandma’s Tattoos” is a documentary of a rarely told story, about the faith of women and their difficult survival during this grim period. Seeking to unravel a family taboo associated with the tattoos on the hands and face of her own grandmother, Khardalian travels to Lebanon, Syria, and the United States, and opens up a discussion about history, memory, silence, and current diasporic life across different continents. Khardalian is expected to join the conversation after the film, together with Dr. Maria Koinova, director of the ERC Project "Diasporas and Contested Sovereignty."

As we previously announced, LFC Academy U18s will visit PAIS next week, for a two day widening participation and outreach event.

During this two day event, the Liverpool U18 team will play a football match against The 果冻传媒 Men’s Football team.

The match will be held on Wednesday 29 April at 3pm, at Cryfield sports pitches. You must have a ticket in order to attend the match.

If you would like a ticket, please visit the PAIS teaching office (S1.45) from today! As mentioned, we only have a limited number of tickets, so it will be first come, first served!

For anyone who doesn't get one of the limited tickets, the match will also be shown live on the big screen at the Piazza.

Following our recent announcement that Liverpool FC Academy will visit PAIS for a widening participation and outreach visit, we invite you to attend a special lecture.

Entitled ‘Politics and Power in the ‘People’s Game’’, Dr David Webber will deliver the keynote lecture for the LFC ‘Pathways to Higher Education’ visit. You can view the poster for the event here.

Come along and listen to David present his research on the ‘great transformation’ of English football.

Developing the ideas of the economic sociologist, Karl Polanyi, David traces the origins of modern football, and analyses the political, economic and cultural effects that the transformation of the game has had upon different sets of supporters.

David has written a number of academic papers on the cultural political economy of English football, contributed a chapter for a forthcoming book on European football supporters, and has recently appeared in the New Statesman and When Saturday Comes.

David is a lifelong Liverpool FC fan and a member of the Liverpool supporters union, Spirit of Shankly.

The lecture is open to all and will take place on Tuesday 28 April at 7.30pm in R0.21 Ramphal lecture theatre. Tickets are not required.

In an exciting new venture, we will be offering a Double MA in Global Governance in association with the , Canada.

The degree programme will combine Waterloo’s Master of Arts in Global Governance (MAGG) programme, based at the , with the choice of .

The programme allows students to start at 果冻传媒 or at Waterloo. On completing the two year course of study, students will receive degrees from two prestigious and internationally recognized institutions.
