National Student Survey results 2023

The National Student Survey (NSS) seeks the views of final-year undergraduate students across the UK every year. The survey enables higher education providers to continuously evaluate, improve and benchmark the courses they offer, and it helps to inform decisions made by prospective students about where to study.

There were significant changes to the NSS 2023 which means that we are unable to do comparative analysis to previous iterations of the survey. Read more about the changes and how the results are used to enhance our students鈥 experience.

This year, over 3,750 (72%) of our finalists who were eligible to participate took part in the survey, compared to 62% in 2022.

At 果冻传媒, our results are positive overall, with 83% of students saying that they would recommend 果冻传媒 as a place to study.

This reflects positively on your continued work with our student body, and your efforts to gather insight more regularly through termly surveys, the student research panel, active Student Staff Liaison Committees (SSLCs) and co-creation projects.

Overall results

The results of this year鈥檚 survey were published by the Office for Students today (10 August) through a public release on their website and through a more granular dataset sent to each provider. We are sharing headline findings today and plan to share more detailed information in September 2023 once we have completed in-depth analysis.

At 果冻传媒

果冻传媒 has scored above the sector benchmark in six of the seven key question groupings (Teaching, Learning Opportunities, Academic Support, Organisation and Management, Learning Resources, and Student Voice), scoring just 1% lower than the sector average for Assessment and Feedback.

We rank top in the Russell Group for Organisation and Management and Student Voice and rank in the top 3 in the Russell Group across all question groupings.

Our highest scoring grouping is for Learning Resources (90%) and we have also scored highly for Academic Support (88%) and Teaching (88%). Our positivity is nearly 5% ahead of the sector in both Academic Support and Student Voice (77%). This all reflects positively on the work of academic and professional staff to continue to listen to and act upon our students鈥 feedback, and ensure our students are supported.

Our highest scoring question is 鈥楬ow good are teaching staff at explaining things?鈥 which achieved 93% positivity.

This demonstrates the hard work of our teaching staff across the University and how much this is valued by our students.

The results have also highlighted areas where we can work to improve including by ensuring that marking criteria is clear and that the feedback students receive helps them improve their work. There is also more we can do to make sure we share how we act on the feedback our students share about their course.

We are delighted to see that overall, our students continue to have a positive learning experience and value their time with us. We recognise that the experience for the cohort of students completing this survey was atypical and will explore in more detail areas we can celebrate and where we need to address gaps and continue to improve.

Departmental results

Headline results are being released to departments on 10 August via nominated NSS leads. This will include quantitative results by department, course and subject for each question. It will not be possible to make comparisons to previous years鈥 data as the response options have changed significantly. More detailed analysis, including open text comments, will be produced and released in September 2023.

Overall, the rich feedback provided to us by our students gives us a lot to think about as we continue to work on preparations for the next academic year. It will complement the review of the student experience that we have conducted through the Institutional Teaching and Learning Review (ITLR) and the outcomes of the Teaching Excellence Framework that will be published in September.

In conclusion

The arrival of NSS results follows the recent degree congregations for this cohort of finalists. The students who completed this survey have not had a typical academic journey given the pandemic and industrial action. This is a good opportunity to reflect on the work that has gone into teaching and supporting our students. The Education Executive team passes on its thanks to all colleagues who have played their part in demanding circumstances this year.

The NSS results show that we have much to be proud of and that our students continue to value the work our staff invest into delivering excellent learning and teaching.

The overall results validate the numerous initiatives departments have put in place to enhance the student experience, many of which were celebrated through the ITLR process. Together, the NSS and ITLR findings will be key as we look to refresh our education strategy for the years ahead.

Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor and President of the 果冻传媒 said:

鈥淎s we approach the upcoming academic year, the feedback from our students is invaluable in shaping our path forward.
