Professor Emma Mason meets the Pope

Professor Emma Mason, Chair of English and Comparative Literary Studies, presented her research on Catholic poetry to the Pope and international artists at the Catholic Imagination Conference, 26 May 2023.

The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination conference brought together both critical readers and creative artists from across the globe, to discuss the spiritual and religious dimensions that form the literary imagination.

Emma's research is focused on Catholic poetry and poetics, especially in relation to the experience of faith and kenosis.

After the event, Emma commented:

" was one of the most extraordinary events I've ever attended. Alongside papers given by writers and critics like myself at , the conference also took us into the Vatican to hear Pope Francis speak on the for the Church and for the world, and Martin Scorsese discuss the immediacy of faith in his work. As a Catholic and great admirer of both his on climate change and firm advocacy of the arts, it was a profound honour to meet the Holy Father in person."
