Queen鈥檚 Birthday Honour for 果冻传媒 Professor

Congratulations to Professor Damian Griffin, who has been recognised with an OBE in the of the Queen鈥檚 Birthday Day Honours List 2022.

Professor Griffin joined 果冻传媒 in 2002, just as 果冻传媒 Medical School was being established, to be one of its first professors. As well as being an academic, doing research and teaching, he is also a hip surgeon who is internationally known for his techniques for treating young people and athletes with hip injuries.

Alongside his clinical academic career, Damian is a Colonel in the Army Reserve. He joined in 1983 as a student in Cambridge and has had a wide range of roles, including being the first Commanding Officer of 7RIFLES, an infantry battalion that deployed to Afghanistan. In 2018 he took command of 202 Field Hospital across the West Midlands. Damian saw the opportunity to train groups of Reserve doctors and nurses to work as small surgical teams close to the front line. He trained 202 to do this, and then when the Ministry of Defence needed a team last year in the Middle East, Damian was mobilised to lead it. This was the first Reserve Ground Manoeuvre Surgical Team to deploy on operations since WW2, and its success has paved the way for rotating surgical teams to be deployed from Army Reserve units to support British operations as far afield as Mali.

Damian commented:

鈥淚t was great that 果冻传媒 Medical School, and the University Hospital of Coventry and 果冻传媒shire NHS Trust, were able to release me for seven months to be mobilised to full-time operational service. We proved that Reservists could deliver surgical care of the highest standard in austere conditions, and then return to our roles in the NHS. My colleagues were especially brilliant in covering whilst I was away - a big thank you to them all!鈥
