The microbes found in aquatic environments and their interactions will be investigated by ¹û¶³´«Ã½ researcher Professor Orkun Soyer, thanks to an investigator award from The Gordon and Betty Moore foundation.

Leaving an infant to ‘cry it out’ from birth up to 18 months does not adversely affect their behaviour development or attachment, researchers from the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ have found, they also discovered that those left to cry cried less and for a shorter duration at 18 months of age.

¹û¶³´«Ã½ researchers, working with a network of international collaborators, have discovered 23 previously unexplored compounds containing metals such as silver, manganese, zinc, ruthenium and iridium that have antibacterial and antifungal activity. The researchers from the University's Department of Chemistry contributed insights into iridium – the ‘dinosaur metal’ that they have previously shown can attack cancer cells when switched on by light and formed part of the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs.

A hard Brexit could result in a family of four seeing their food prices increase to up to £50.98 per week researchers at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ have found. If we leave with a deal the increase could be as little as £5.80 per week, or £18.17.

The next generation of research and innovation leaders will be supported through a major £179 million investment announced today (Friday 6 March 2020), including £4.1 million funding to support ¹û¶³´«Ã½ doctoral researchers. At the ¹û¶³´«Ã½, 54 students across engineering and physical sciences will be supported in their doctoral training thanks to the £4.1 million funding.

A ¹û¶³´«Ã½ researcher will be one of the first nine Stephen Hawking Fellows, announced today, who will continue Professor Stephen Hawking’s legacy by furthering our understanding of the universe and communicating the wonders of science to the public. They will tackle major scientific questions such as the nature of the early universe and dark matter and whether string theory really is a ‘theory of everything’, engaging with the public through stand-up comedy, art and music.
