One of the world’s leading English literature departments is celebrating awards, nominations, and grant success—and has once more secured a top 20 world ranking.

English and Comparative Literary Studies at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ has been ranked 20^th in the world for English Literature in the 2019 QS Subject Rankings, the third year in a row the department has achieved a top 20 ranking. The department was previously ranked 1st in REF2014.

The first study of the impact of digital mobile devices on different aspects of family time in the UK has found that children are spending more time at home with their parents rather than less. The increase is in what is called ‘alone-together’ time, when children are at home with their parents but say they are alone. However, the study also found no evidence that device use had displaced traditional shared activities like family meals and watching television.

A survey led by a ¹û¶³´«Ã½ psychology researcher of gambling advertising research since 2014 shows a shows rapid increases in amount and potential influence.

Dr Susana Gomes, a ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Zeeman lecturer at the Mathematics Institute, ¹û¶³´«Ã½, hailing from Porto, Portugal, is attending Parliament to present her mathematics research to a range of politicians and a panel of expert judges, as part of STEM for BRITAIN on Wednesday 13^th March.

The Science Minister announced the UK’s agreement with partners including the European Space Agency in a mission, called Planetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) scientifically led by the ¹û¶³´«Ã½, which will search for Earth-like planets orbiting alien stars.
