Globular clusters 4 billion years younger than previously thought

Globular clusters could be up to 4 billion years younger than previously thought, new research led by the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ has found.

Comprised of hundreds of thousands of stars densely packed into a tight ball, globular clusters had been thought to be almost as old as the Universe itself - but thanks to newly developed research models it has been shown that they could be as young as 9 billion years old rather than 13 billion.

Hotter bodies fight infections and tumours better – researchers show how

The hotter our body temperature, the more our bodies speed up a key defence system that fights against tumours, wounds or infections, new research by a multidisciplinary team of mathematicians and biologists from the Universities of ¹û¶³´«Ã½ and Manchester has found.


UK’s first 1 GHz solid-state NMR Spectrometer funded at ¹û¶³´«Ã½

The UK’s first 1 GHz solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer is on its way to the ¹û¶³´«Ã½, thanks to £8 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).


Nanoscale measurements 100x more precise, thanks to improved two-photon technique

The precision of measuring nanoscopic structures could be substantially improved, thanks to research involving the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ and QuantIC researchers at the University of Glasgow and Heriot Watt University into optical sensing. QuantIC is the UK Quantum Technology Hub in Quantum Enhanced Imaging and part of the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme.

WMG to test new location system for intelligent vehicles

Intelligent vehicles and smart devices could gain more accurate location awareness by ‘fusing’ Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and WiFi signals – and a test for this is the focus of an Innovate UK project led by Spirent Communications and involving WMG at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½.
