Sending discharge letters to patients as well as their GPs when they leave hospital could make a substantial difference to patient outcomes, according to a new study by ¹û¶³´«Ã½ researchers.

Trade unions are crucial in advancing workers’ rights, but it is unhelpful to consider their leaders as representatives of the working class as a whole when analysing labour relations and government policies, a new paper from the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Department of Sociology argues.

A new project led by Professor John Solomos of ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Sociology will look at the social and political life of London to test whether the utopian ideal of the Open City exists in real life, and explore issues of race, migration, mobility and living with diversity. 

Extreme space weather events can significantly impact systems such as satellites, communications systems, power distribution and aviation. They are driven by solar activity which is known to have an irregular but roughly 11 year cycle. By devising a new, regular ‘sun clock’, researchers have found that the switch on and off of periods of high solar activity is quite sharp, and are able to determine the switch on/off times. Their analysis shows that whilst extreme events can happen at any time, they are much less likely to occur in the quiet interval.

Dr Theo Damoulas, associate Professor in Data Science at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ and Deputy Programme Director for the Turing’s Data-centric Engineering programme is working with GLA, TfL, Microsoft and other Universities to help inform London's response to the Covid-19 lockdown in a project called "Odysseus", which aims to understand 'London's busyness'.

A ¹û¶³´«Ã½ legal history expert has been chosen as one of the voices bringing the past to life in the new series of the popular BBC Two show, A House Through Time, which returned yesterday evening. Dr Laura Lammasniemi, from ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Law School, will appear in the third episode of the new series, which sees David Olusoga and his team in Bristol.
