A project co-developed by a ¹û¶³´«Ã½ researcher that uses real-world research to bring chemistry to life for school students has been recognised with a national award from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Coronavirus diagnostics currently require centralised facilities and collection/distribution of swabs and results are ‘next day’. A new diagnostic tool being developed by the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ and its partner Iceni Diagnostics may allow on-the-spot detection of Coronavirus infection, without out facilities using a simple disposal device.

A new coalition of more than 500 scientists from around the world, including the ¹û¶³´«Ã½, has been created to share data on COVID-19 gleaned from the use of mass spectrometry techniques which examine people’s blood and other biomarkers.

Midlands Medictech company Medherant has just this month (May 2020) signed a  partnership agreement with Cambridge based Cycle Pharmaceuticals to develop multiple new products using Medherant technology developed by ¹û¶³´«Ã½ chemistry researchers. Coventry based Medherant’s TEPI Patch® Technology uses transdermal delivery technology (a patch that can simply be applied to the skin) and medicines for rare diseases combine to deliver significant quality-of-life benefits for patients.

Using a carbon monoxide tipped super sharp needle frozen to 7 Kelvin (minus 266 degrees centigrade), researchers at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ can identify whether bonds are hydrogen or halogen, and are also able to pick up minute defects in these materials. These results could be of high relevance to help creating new pharmaceuticals that are purer than ever.

(Verdel) has recently announced the close of its £1 million equity funding round from Longwall Ventures.

Verdel is a UK-based company pushing the boundaries of complex sample analysis using innovative Two-Dimensional Mass Spectrometry (2DMS) technology. The approach was originally developed for large, complex FT-ICR instruments, but Verdel has developed technology that transfers the technique onto commonly used, high throughput linear ion trap instruments. Verdel’s technology is based on research by Professor Peter O’Connor at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½.
