Opportunities to meet and hear Judge Joseph Migliozzi

Judge Joseph Migliozzi will be speaking on the practice of law in the US, focusing on the current state of the death penalty. Joe is a District Court Judge in Virginia and has extensive experience both as a judge and as a Capital Defence Attorney. Student volunteering opportunities at Coventry Law Centre advertised

The Centre for Human Rights in Practice has again arranged with Coventry Law Centre for a small number of ��ý law students in their 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th years to have the opportunity to volunteer in the asylum and immigration team. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical legal experience in one of the country's leading law centres. It is particularly valuable for those considering a career in refugee/asylum law or other areas of human rights-related practice. Volunteers will be selected through submission of CVs and interviews. There will be a presentation on Friday 5th October at 11am in OC0.01 by Robert Bircumshaw, head of the asylum and immigration team at Coventry Law Centre, explaining about their work and the nature of the volunteering opportunities. You will have an opportunity then to ask any questions you may have.

How can universities support school students to write about social justice issues? - Report of a Workshop

On 29 June 2017, The 'Writing Wrongs' workshop brought together academics, writers and a range of other individuals with experience of teaching in schools and/or organising activities for school students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We asked 'How can universities support school students to write about social justice issues?' This report of our workshop summarises our discussions and key findings.

Crucially workshop attendees all agreed that there is significant added value in a national network of universities offering opportunities for school students from disadvantaged backgrounds to develop their skills in writing about social justice issues. Monday 6th March (4.30-6.30pm – ��ý University, Oculus OC1.09) – Public Lecture by Dame Anne Owers, IPCC chair ‘Guarding the Guards’: Dame Anne Owers draws on her own experiences of inspecting prisons and investigating the police. Wednesday 8th March (3.30-6pm – ��ý Arts Centre, Woods-Scawen room) – ‘Gender, Harm and Suicides in Prison’ Our prisons are in crisis with insufficient funding and staff, and prisoner safety is at risk. This Criminal Justice Centre event brings together academics, policymakers, practitioners and stakeholders, to consider ways of reducing the risks of harm and suicide for women in prison, and improving the wellbeing of prisoners. Centre Co-Director James Harrison will lead a policy seminar in Brussels on 2 March which will focus on researching findings about labour rights provisions in EU trade agreements. Full details of the seminar are set out below.

This policy seminar will present recent research findings which highlight the limitations in the functioning of labour provisions in trade and sustainable development (TSD) chapters in EU trade agreements. The researchers will set out the aims of the TSD chapters and explain the key problems in achieving them. This will provide the basis for a discussion between all seminar participants about possible ways of overcoming the limitations that have been identified.

Key questions for discussion will include:

· What results and impacts have the monitoring and dialogue mechanisms within the TSD chapters achieved so far? Can they function more effectively in the future? Can the role of civil society become more significant?

· To what extent can (1) increased prioritisation of TSD chapters by key actors; (2) better resourcing of the TSD chapter’s key functions; (3) greater enforceability of provisions; and/or (4) better recognition of the different issues faced in different trading partner contexts overcome current limitations?

· Do we have to look beyond the ‘TSD chapter’ model to ensure that the social dimensions of EU FTAs are appropriately addressed?
