Teaching Race and the British Empire
Friday 2nd March, 16:45-19:00 at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½

Secondary History teachers are invited to a special CPD event at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ exploring the West India Regiments in the 18th to 20th centuries as a lens through which to examine colonial history, empire, the slave trade, and military history.
 
Speakers include:

• Keynote speakers Abdul Mohamud and Dr Robin Whitburn, founders of Justice To History and history educators at UCL Institute of Education

• Andy Holland, who has worked as a History teacher and lecturer in schools and colleges for over 30 years, and is also an experienced A Level examiner and the author of a number of A Level History textbooks

• Melissa Bennett, PhD student at ¹û¶³´«Ã½ University working on the Africa’s Sons Under Arms Project and Higher Education Coordinator at Museum of London

The event will enable teachers to build on their knowledge of teaching race and empire in the classroom through object-based learning, extend best practice in developing students’ skills in historical enquiry and interpretation, and take away practical ideas for lessons. There will also be networking opportunities and refreshments provided.

 
The event is aimed at key stage 3, key stage 4 and A Level History teachers.
 
The event is part of Africa's Sons Under Arms, a collaborative research project between the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ and the British Library, and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It uses the history of the West India Regiments to explore armed people of African descent serving within the wider British army. This will bring improved understanding of the nature of racial thought from the 18th to 20th centuries. For more information on the project and to view online resources:

Teachers can now register their post-16 students for the (23^rd – 31^st January). The online competition challenges students with an interest in biology to expand their talents, and also provides a means of selecting a team to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad. Your first two student participants can take part free of charge.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Year 11/12 students to learn valuable research and presentations skills, engage with current academic debate, meet world leading academics and get a taste of the vibrant and engaging life at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½

This event is modelled on the popular BBC television series The Apprentice. Year 9 pupils will be divided into small groups and will be set the challenge of producing an advertising campaign to encourage foreign tourist boards to invest in their company and the local area.

We offer a range of one off events for Year 10 and/or Year 11 students for those who may be interested in pursuing a business/economics degree or a career in the financial sector.

The Central WP team provide support to departments as faculty link officers. Tonight marks a bi-annual training event where the WP team train current students who are going to be representing their departments by working with young people as departmental ambassadors within schools and during on-campus events. Over 50 students are expected to attend tonight’s training and ensure that they are cool, calm and confident when representing their departments with prospective applicants.
