Submission Instructions
Assessment Deadlines
The dates and times by which you should submit your work for assessment are given on Tabula. Please also see our schematic map of all student deadlines.
Work should be uploaded to Tabula by the date and time specified on the system and following the online instructions.
Please note that since this is an electronic system, it is very accurate, so even if you submit your work just one second after the deadline, it will be marked as late and penalties will be imposed accordingly.
Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to upload your work and try not to leave this until the deadline day itself. If you encounter any technical problems with your IT equipment or with uploading your work which mean that you are unable to meet the deadline, these cannot be accepted as a valid reason for late or non-submission and penalties will be imposed accordingly. Work submitted by any other means (e.g. emailed to the Office or a Tutor) will not be accepted.
File Naming
While there is no "correct" way to name a file, we strongly urge you to adopt a robust convention for naming and organising your files before submitting work - this will help prevent you from accidentally submitting the wrong file. Submission of the wrong file will result in penalties.
A meaningful filename would contain your student number, the module code, assignment name and an indication that it is the final version, for example:
1234567 - HI127 - Source Review - FINAL.pdf
Do not include your own name in the document or file name.
Presentation, Formatting and Word Counts
Check how to present your coursework, including what is / is not included in the word count.
Penalties
Deadlines for the submission of work are available on Tabula.
Students are expected to submit assessed work by the published deadline. Work submitted after the deadline is classified as late, unless an extension is in place. Late penalties apply automatically, unless an approved mitigation decision permits them to be waived.
Students are responsible for allowing sufficient time to submit their work and for checking that submission has been successful.
Unless a self-certification or formal extension has been applied in advance of the deadline:
- A penalty of 5 marks per UK working day will be applied.
- Penalties are applied in 24-hour periods from the published submission deadline.
-
There is no upper limit to the total penalty for late submission.
This means:
- A submission up to 24 hours late will receive a 5-mark deduction
- A submission more than 24 hours late (e.g. 24 hours and 1 second) will receive a 10-mark deduction
For the purposes of late penalties:
- Only UK working days are counted
- Weekends, bank holidays, and University closure days are excluded
If, for medical or other compelling reasons, you require an extension on an assignment please see the Extension policyLink opens in a new window.
Please note that late submissions will not be accepted for 7 day take-home assessmentsLink opens in a new window, and these assignments are not eligible for self-certifications or extensions. Any late submissions will receive a mark of 0.
Technical problems (including upload failures, incorrect file submissions, or IT issues) are not accepted as valid reasons for late submission.
Non-Submission, Incorrect Submission, and Last Submission Date
Non-Submission
If you do not submit an assignment, it will receive a zero. If this results in the failure of the module overall, then you may be eligible for reassessment.
Non-Submission / Attendance of Assessed Presentations
If you are unable to attend a scheduled presentation you will receive a mark of 0 (in the same way as if you did not submit any other assignment). If you have mitigation for illness or other circumstances then you should submit this as soon as possible (please see the Mitigation policyLink opens in a new window). The Examination Board may:
- allow a further first attempt (with an alternative assignment if necessary)
- allow a resit where the work is capped at 40% (with an alternative assignment if necessary)
- in exceptional circumstances, waive the need to take the component (usually only if the assessment component is worth less than 3 CATS).
Last Submission Date Policy:
Students will not normally be able to submit coursework once feedback for that assignment has been released. The History Office can only reopen a specific assignment for a student if the student has support to do this from their personal or senior tutor. In this instance, students should note the following:
- The submission will be a late submission, so late penalties will be imposed.
- Late penalties can be waived with an approved mitigation applicationLink opens in a new window, but the department cannot guarantee whether late penalties will be waived, because this decision is made by the Mitigation Panel and Exam Board in the summer.
- As a late submission, work will not be subject to the same 20 working day marking turnaround university policy and therefore feedback may take longer than usual.
- Students are encouraged to submit late work as soon as possible, so that it doesn鈥檛 impact other deadlines.
- In addition to this, students should note that any work submitted after the following dates will not be marked, will receive an automatic mark of zero, and will not be considered by the relevant exam board.
- Undergraduates: 12 noon Wednesday 9 June 2027.
- Postgraduate Taught Students: 12 noon Wednesday 26 May 2027.
Submission of Wrong File
PLEASE NOTE: This policy has been updated for 2026/27.
It is your responsibility to check Tabula and ensure that you have uploaded the correct file for all of your assessments.
It is best practice to download the submission receipt from Tabula. You should also always download and double check that the file you have uploaded is the correct assignment and follows submission instructions, where relevant.
A correct file:
- Is the final version of the correct assignment for the correct module.
- Includes all elements of the assignment (e.g. the bibliography, or both answers if it is a two-question take home assessment).
- Is of a file type able to be opened on staff computers. For written work, files should be in .docx or .pdf format. NOTE: Students are provided with a Microsoft 365 licence. If you use software other than that provided by the university, the file may not open and will be considered a wrong file.
- Is not corrupted.
If you accidentally submit the wrong file:
Before the deadline:
- You can replace your file without penalty.
After the deadline:
- You must email the History Office as soon as possible to seek advice.
- If it is within 2 university working days of your original deadline, with your agreement, the History Office will delete your initial submission from Tabula and then reopen the assessment for submission. Late penalties will apply from the original deadline until the correct file is submitted.
- If more than 2 university working days have passed, you will need to wait for marking to be completed.
- If you receive a mark of zero, the assignment will be considered as a non-submission, and the History Office will, with your agreement, be able to reopen it for submission under the Last Submission Date Policy. Late penalties will apply from the original deadline until the correct file is submitted.
- If you receive marks and feedback for the assignment, then those marks will be final. If you fail the assignment, and this results in you failing the module overall, then you may be eligible for reassessment.
Notes:
- This policy does NOT apply to 7-day take home assessments or timed exams. Please see our take home assessmentLink opens in a new window page for full details.
- Work that has been submitted will be marked as it is submitted. If you do not report an issue, your submitted file will be marked as it stands.
- Staff are not expected to identify incorrect file submissions.
- No files can be received or marked outside of Tabula: staff will not accept submission by email or by other means.
