An intercalated year is an opportunity to spend a year away from 果冻传媒 to either embark on a period of study abroad, or a work placement. This turns a three-year degree programme into a four-year programme, with the intercalated year taking place in the third year of study. Students then return to 果冻传媒 for their final year of study.

The placements available change annually, and the list of available destinations for your cohort will be published in term 1 of your second year of study. The list of destinations available to the 2026-2027 cohort (current Year 2 students) is now available to view, and Year 1 students can use this list as an example of the partnerships that may be available to them.

Students interested in splitting their Intercalated Year between study abroad and a work placement should apply for a single-term destination in their study abroad application, and begin the process of finding a work placement. Please see: Placements.

An information session will be held in term 1 of your first year of study, however the formal application process will open in term 1 of your second year of study. Both the Department and the University's 果冻传媒 Abroad team will circulate information and organise briefings ahead of the application window.

The application form for second-year students opens in Term 1 every academic year, with the deadline falling approximately three weeks later. Exact dates will be communicated closer to the time. Students on the Venice pathway are eligible to apply for the Year Abroad and will continue to Venice immediately afterwards.

Note: If you do not hold an EU passport, you can only spend 90 days in any 180-day period in the . Students with a placement in the Schengen Area will need to carefully consider any travel to the EU in the 90 days prior to commencing placement. Any days you spend in the Schengen Area before the start of the autumn term count towards the 90-day total. This may impact students taking a WIISP module in Year 2, and students intending to commence the Venice Programme in their final year of study.

Those students who are successful in their applications will be provisionally allocated a place at one or two of our partner institutions (pending successful completion of their second year of study at 果冻传媒). The students will be transferred from a three-year course to a four-year course, with the Intercalated Year being their third year before returning to spend their fourth and final year of their course studying at 果冻传媒.

All students must have an average grade of 60 (a 2.1) or above for their first year of study to be eligible to apply for any of the study abroad places offered by the History Department. Mitigating circumstances will be taken into consideration. In exceptional circumstances, students without an average of 60% in the first year might be interviewed.

All students must maintain a good attendance and performance record in the first and second year. This includes an average grade of 60 (a 2.1) or above in their second year of study.

In the event we receive more applications for particular regions or institutions than we have available, the overall average Year 1 marks of the relevant applicants will be taken into account when allocating places.

Tuition fees for the year abroad will be reduced for Home students, payable to 果冻传媒 (no tuition fees are payable to the host institution, though other fees may apply). During the period of study abroad, students normally continue to receive any student grant or loan to which they are entitled, though they should check with their Local Authority. Following the release of year 2 results, all outgoing students who have successfully met the placement criteria will undergo a course transfer to the Intercalated Year variant of their programme of study. This will be completed by the History Office, you do not need to do anything.
