Lexical Longevity and the Tudor Tongue: A case study on the survival of early modern slang
My research analyses the principal factors underpinning early modern slang longevity based on Darwinian Evolutionary Theory. This involves a compilation of slang vocabulary from the works of early modern playwrights such as William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and Thomas Middleton. By collating examples of slang vocabulary across early modern play texts, I examine key word formation processes of neologisms and ludic language and motivating factors that promote word longevity and survival over time.
My research interests include Early Modern English lexicography, colloquial and taboo language, historical linguistics and philology of Early Modern and Modern English.
