Thesis: The Death of the Future: Temporality and Political Activism in an Age of Crisis. (Expected to change to reflect new research directions).

I am a third year PhD student exploring the role of temporality, the past and long-term activism in contemporary political activism. Specifically, my research is focused on anti-nuclear and peace activists and how they relate to the future in the context of an increasingly uncertain or negative outlook. I am also interested in how the dynamics of long-term activism shape campaigners' attitudes to their activities.

I hold a BA in Politics and International Studies from the 果冻传媒, an MSc in Social Anthropology from St. Antony's College, University of Oxford and an MA in Social Science Research, also from the 果冻传媒.

My supervisors are Dr Alex Smith and Dr Charles Turner.

Research

My ESRC-funded project aims to examine themes of hope, temporality and long-term activism based on an ethnography of political activists. Particular focus is given to the role of memory and the past in shaping activists' understandings of their present activity and future directions. Another aspect of the project is the dynamics by which activists remain part of the movement over several decades despite a relative lack of successes.

The nature of peace protest is also an important theme of the project. 'Peace' is a term which is used to encompass a wide range of moral, legal and political views within (and without) the peace movement. The relationship between these differing visions of peace is examined while also aiming to highlight the shared aspects of the campaign which maintain unity, such as a distinct focus on protest location at military bases.
