Fire safety top tips
Living in shared accommodation, on or off campus can come with increased fire risks, but there are simple things you and your housemates can do to stay safe. A small fire can become a serious one in less than 30 seconds, so a few simple precautions can make a big difference.
Take a moment to check that your student home is fire safe and that you know what to do if a fire starts.
We remind you to Take Fire Safety Seriously and follow the necessary fire safety precautions:
1. Smoke Detectors are there for your safety
Never cover or obstruct fire safety equipment. These measures are in place for your safety in the event of a fire.

2. Take it outside
Smoking is not permitted indoors. This includes electronic cigarettes, vaping and burning candles or incense. You can make use of our designated smoking areas outside.
3. Help prevent false alarms
- Take note of the position of fire detection equipment in your space(s) and avoid using aerosols, hair styling products and heated appliances near to detectors

Keep the door closed when showering or running hot water in your bathroom or ensuite

4. Never leave cooking unattended
Distractions whilst cooking are our number one cause of accidental fires.
5. Please use the kitchens
Deep fat-frying in residences and cooking in bedrooms is not permitted.
6. Help us keep you safe
- Do not ignore alarms - leave straight away
- Keep fire doors closed and know your escape routes
- Don't overload electrical sockets - use the correct UK plugs/adaptors in all sockets
- Keep corridors and stairways clear at all times
If you follow these rules, we can collectively minimise the chances of a fire. However, accidents can still happen, and it is very important that you are familiar with the procedure should a fire break out in your building.
