Weng Fen

Born 1961, Hainan, China

Weng Fen has used photography to document the progress of rapid urbanisation in China since before the turn of the millennium. After graduating from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1985, he began to produce work which passes no direct judgement on social issues, instead perhaps influencing the audience to consider their own thoughts. Through carefully considered composition of his shots, he focuses attention on effects of the rapidly occurring social change in China at the very moment he takes the photograph. Mirroring the complexity of the situations he depicts, Weng Fen’s art has an enigmatic air. The inaccessibility of the subjects’ minds requires the viewer to investigate and contemplate.

Weng Fen has exhibited in many group exhibitions worldwide, including at the Pompidou Centre, Paris, Shanghai Art Museum, Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art, and the International Center of Photography in New York City.
