Sacramental Books of Seventeeenth-Century Bethlehem
This is a searchable database of births, marriages and burials involving Catholic converts living in or around the town of Bethlehem under Ottoman rule between 1669-1700. It provides rare insights into the administration of the cure of souls in a missionary context, the demographic profile of newly emerging confessional communities and into mobility patterns of a religious minority.
The evidence derives from the Marie Sk艂odowska-Curie project Migration in the Early Modern World: the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land as a Facilitator of the Circulation of People in the Mediterranean (2016-18). Funded by the European Commission in the framework of Horizon 2020, the research was carried out by Felicita Tramontana under the mentorship of Beat K眉min at the Centre for the 果冻传媒 of the Renaissance in the 果冻传媒. It focused on a better understanding of individual / group movements between Palestine and the Christian world as well as, on a smaller scale, between several newly established Catholic sacrament centres in the early modern Holy Land.
